While the similarity between the brain and the cape of God in Michalangelo's fresco is apparent, I've seen other allegories as well. One says that God, with his following, wrapped in the cape, represents the womb. And the whole painting is an allegory of the plight of women. They are the ones who give life (hence God touching Adam's finger). The folded fabric of the cape stands for the uterus in this interpretation, following many anatomical features. And yet, the characters inside the "uterus" seem to try to distance themselves from the Creator. This piece of art remains influential today because of the depth of the layers, the various meanings a viewer can extract from it. The obvious interpretation is that of God giving life to Adam, a fundamental creation myth. But, on top of that, you have all those extra layers of meaning. God as the brain, the physical manifestation of consciousness, bestowing life to Adam, the human. That's one possible interpretation, but not the only one.

Okay if there’s anyone deceived by this, this is a modern invention that a Renaissance perspective would have thought ridiculous. Most of the these thinkers are influenced by the Neoplatonists and Aristotle that see God as Mind. They would ask why is the human mind capable of seeing the things of God, and saw the answer in the Imago Dei: the mind is a participation and likeness of God.
